Amazing Race

“It’s not polite to stare” is not a phrase well versed in Indian culture. As we ran around the city today wearing neon orange shirts we were gawked at. It is probably the first time I’ve ever felt uncomfortable with everything I did. I know the people didn’t mean harm in their staring, but everything I move I made I felt them watching, seeing, starrrrrrring.

I was in a group of 5 for the Amazing Race. We had a list of things we had to see all over the city with a limited amount of money. With each place or item, we had to take creative pictures. Read more »

It has begun!

It's here! Our GRO Staff have been excitedly preparing for the arrival of
the delegates and launching our fourth delegation in India, the second in
Trivandrum with National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH). Yesterday,
all of our delegates arrived safely without any serious issues except for
someone's luggage being lost in London (as of a few minutes ago, it has
been safely returned!) Read more »

DAY ONE- From one of the USA Delegates from TSD

This morning, we had a delicious breakfast from Guatefriends, then we went
to oral school with Global Reach Out (GRO) members and Nurika. We found
that their perspective of oral is way different from our America's
perspective. Also, we saw students who still have passion of using sign
language with us while we can't sign to them. That was difficult for us to
see that, but we did enjoy meeting them.

After that, Niruka invited us to visit her organization, Asedes, to meet
other deaf Guatemalans along with delicious lunch. Read more »

Is it Friday already?! time is getting close to go home from GRO program!!
The relationship with Guatemalan Delegates are special, I don't know how to
explain my experience going through a week and also I learned a lot!!
Compared to day one, we, American Delegates, were able to understand
Guatemala Sign Language without having an interpreter!! Everyday in a week,
our eyes worked hard to read and understand what Guatemala Delegates talks
about. Read more »

What an amazing Guatemala experience for me! I am quite unsure where to
start. However, I find myself that I enjoy immersing Guatemala’s culture,
food, local handmade crafts, and community. My first impression of this
country was their fresh fruits (pineapple, watermelon, mango, cantaloupe). I
cannot believe how delicious the fruits are compared to America’s fruits!

On Saturday, March 13th, I met all 15 GRO delegates at the airport in
Guatemala City. We all went to Panajachel and the road trip was about 3
hours. We had to travel through the mountains to get there. Read more »

Sharing your knowledge!

I would like to introduce myself, my name is Noppawan Thamsiriboon. I am
from Thailand. I joined with Global Reach Out (GRO) because I wanted to
learn and experience other country’s culture. I felt that I benefit being
part of GRO program because it gave me the opportunity to learn from
Guatemalan Deaf members’ experiences and their struggle in their home
country. American delegates and Guatemalan delegates shared and discussed
about their Sign Language issues for two hours. Read more »
