Is it Friday already? By Angela Vasquez

Is it Friday already?! time is getting close to go home from GRO program!!
The relationship with Guatemalan Delegates are special, I don't know how to
explain my experience going through a week and also I learned a lot!!
Compared to day one, we, American Delegates, were able to understand
Guatemala Sign Language without having an interpreter!! Everyday in a week,
our eyes worked hard to read and understand what Guatemala Delegates talks
about. Read more »

What an amazing Guatemala experience for me! I am quite unsure where to
start. However, I find myself that I enjoy immersing Guatemala’s culture,
food, local handmade crafts, and community. My first impression of this
country was their fresh fruits (pineapple, watermelon, mango, cantaloupe). I
cannot believe how delicious the fruits are compared to America’s fruits!

On Saturday, March 13th, I met all 15 GRO delegates at the airport in
Guatemala City. We all went to Panajachel and the road trip was about 3
hours. We had to travel through the mountains to get there. Read more »

Sharing your knowledge!

I would like to introduce myself, my name is Noppawan Thamsiriboon. I am
from Thailand. I joined with Global Reach Out (GRO) because I wanted to
learn and experience other country’s culture. I felt that I benefit being
part of GRO program because it gave me the opportunity to learn from
Guatemalan Deaf members’ experiences and their struggle in their home
country. American delegates and Guatemalan delegates shared and discussed
about their Sign Language issues for two hours. Read more »

WOW!

Wow, I have so much to say so you might want to get a cup of java and enjoy
this entry! My first stop after the airport on 13, Marzo 2010 is at Pollo
Campero with the American delegates. Pollo Campero is Guatemala’s version of
KFC in EEUU. I met with most of the delegates there for the first time. It
went well, they were all really bright people with the same version of
empowerment as I. That night we departed for Panajachel. The road trip was 2
hours + and it was chilly at night. Read more »

Amazing Race

Hello, my name is Megumi Kawakami. I am in Antigua, Guatemala. We, 15
delegates from Guatemala and U.S.A, have socialized since this Monday. We
have shared our languages, cultures and experience in the deaf community.

Today, we had a workshop. The workshop was to compare/discuss problems
between U.S.A and Guatemala. I realized that we, deaf people have one thing
in common such as oppression from the hearing society with sign language,
lack of interpreters, etc. Read more »

First Two Days

DiDonna’s Blog

Words cannot describe the type of experience we are going through right now.
When the U.S. delegates arrived in Guatemala City on Saturday, we all
quickly opened up to each other, sharing our life stories and experiences
knowing we would have a great time on this trip. Upon our arrival in
Panajachel, small quaint towns surrounding the beautiful lake—we set out for
a day filled with new discoveries and laughter. I will never forget the tuk
tuk ride (a Guatemalan taxi on three wheels) as we zoomed through narrow
passageways through the slums. Read more »
