Day Two by Marc

The CRAZY ride...

July 22, 2010

All of the American delegates have experienced their first Kenyan
transportation (Matatu). Our first ride was on the KBS (Kenya Bus Service),
it was a pretty bumpy ride. Throughout the bus trip Greg and I treated the
ride as a roller coaster. We were waving our hands in the air and shouting
for joy. Through that experience, we earned so much attention! Most of the
delegates were able to take tons of pictures throughout the downtown of
Nairobi. The second ride was an attempt at tracking down the Nissan Matatu.
Although, the taxi fit most of us but for some of us that were sitting in
the back, we had a hard time squeezing in together. It was tight! Not to
mention the fact it was HOT and the room in the back was so tight that we
had no gaps between each other. The final ride of the day was the taxi cab.
We were planning to take Matatu back to town, then walk to the YMCA where we
are staying but people were piling into the buses (it was rush hour), they
were filling up so fast, so they were impossible to track down. So we ended
up splitting into two groups of 4 in taxis. Little did we know that we were
in for one crazy ride. The craziest you would experience, and that tops any
taxi in America. Our driver drove at an incredible speed despite pedestrians
crossing at no warning and dodging traffic, it was the ride of our life.
Most of the rides have been a truly great experience while others were
terrifying but nevertheless these are memories to keep for a lifetime. Our
days continue and we continue to look forward to meeting the Kenyan
delegates.
