The Kenyan Youth Leadership Campers arrived last week. Some came in buses,
others came on foot. There was a lot of uncertainty in their eyes as they
huddled over to the cafeteria with their bags. It was clear that their
uncertainty had put them on guard. They stayed closely knit with their
schoolmates throughout the night.

To be honest we, the delegates, had no idea what to expect either. The chaos
of opening night had thrown all the delegates into a temporary state of
confusion. The delegates were running around asking each other what to do.
Shortly after all thirty six campers had filed into the cafeteria, the
delegates managed to get a grip on a concrete plan. The campers would be
taken five by five to Margaret for registration in the main office.

The leadership camp is an intensive week-long experience for the campers.
Their average daily schedule consists of several workshops, and several
challenging team based activities. Among the topics we had prepared for them
were:

- Self awareness

- Volunteerism

- Future careers

- Time management

- Leadership

- Empowerment.

Surprisingly, several of these concepts were strangely new to them.
Nevertheless, each topic was tackled with a certain degree of eagerness and
anticipation. The campers loved each workshop the delegates had planned for
them.

Within just a few days delegates began to notice positive changes in the
campers. Their participation in activities became less personal and
increasingly team-based. Those who were quiet began to speak out. And those
who were humble became leaders. It was an inspiration for all of the
American and Kenyan delegates. It also made going to bed at 1am and getting
up at 6:30am much easier for us.
