India — Summer 2007

GRO's second delegation from the U.S. traveled to Mumbai, India in summer of 2007; the third delegation went to Bangalore, India within the same month. GRO experienced its first peer-to-peer programs in both Mumbai and Bangalore. In India, American delegates are matched up with deaf Indians, and the two groups merge to share cultural experiences and issues within their respective Deaf communities. They travel together to other deaf schools and visit with young students there. At the end of the three-week program, the American and Indian delegates present the ideas they shared with each other in role-play format to numerous members of the Indian Deaf community. Topics include common issues experienced within deaf communities across national borders (dinner table syndrome, media access, hearing stereotypes, educational options, etc.), with visual demonstrations of how to potentially approach and/or solve those issues.
