Dates: July 29, 2009 to August 20, 2009

Participants

Alim Chandani
Executive Director

Alim Chandani graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) with a B.S. in New Media and E-Business and from New York University with a M.A. in Deafness Rehabilitation and Higher Education. Alim is now working towards obtaining his doctorate degree in Administration and Supervision in Special Education at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. In 2005, Alim was a human rights delegate for Global Youth Connect with fellow delegates in Cambodia. Inspired by this experience, he conceived the idea of providing cross-cultural programs for American deaf youth within developing countries. Thus, the concept of GRO was born. Presently, Alim has a specific mission and vision and carefully plans each trip in furtherance of GRO's goals. He constantly looks for ways to create and enrich global networks between deaf communities and seeks the long-term success of these connections.

Norma Moran - Program Coordinator
Norma Moran
Program Coordinator

As the Program Coordinator for GRO’s Kenya Program, Norma is thrilled to be returning to Kenya! After graduating in 2000 with a B.S. degree in Professional and Technical Communication from the Rochester Institute of Technology, Norma joined the Peace Corps. She served as a Deaf Education Volunteer in Kenya for three years at a school for the deaf in a tiny town right on the Earth’s equator. Afterward, she obtained a Masters’ degree in International and Training Education from American University in Washington, D.C. As a child, Norma fled a war torn El Salvador, and she strives to give back to the developing world for she had the privilege of growing up in the U.S. that many do not. Norma believes in Marcel Proust’s quote, “The real voyage of discovering does not consist in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.

Margaret Odhiambo - Point of Contact
Margaret Odhiambo
Point of Contact

A teacher by profession with the Teachers' Service Commission for the past 7 years, Margaret works with multi‐handicapped deaf children at the Mumias Primary School for the Deaf in Kenya's Western Province. In addition to her teaching duties, Margaret is also pursuing a Bachelor of Education degree at Kenyatta University, which she attends during the school holidays (April, August, and December). She is currently in her final year, and her area of study is Special Education with an emphasis on Deaf Education.

Sarah Gordon
Point of Contact

Feeling blessed to have been deaf since birth, Sarah graduated with a B.F.A. in Visual Media from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2007. While at RIT, she was actively involved in the campus community, participating in various organizations. Sarah was involved in endeavors such as performing and assisting with the production of the women empowering performance of the Vagina Monologues, serving as the President of a women's club called the Doves, and as the National Technical Institute for the Deaf's Student Congress President as well. GRO is near and dear to the heart as she was a former delegate in the Thailand 2007 program and a Team Leader for the India 2007 program. It was through GRO that she finally decided to join the Peace Corps as a Volunteer. She currently serves in Kenya as a Deaf Education Volunteer at the Mtwapa Special Unit in Mtwapa town, which is north of Mobasa in the Coast Province. So, of course, she is THRILLED to introduce GRO to the beautiful Mother Kenya! Karibu sana!

Aaron Delbruegge
GRO Delegate

Aaron Delbruegge, hails from St. Louis, Missouri, a big town with an unique flavor to it. He attended an oral-based deaf school, and was mainstreamed up to his second year of college. Yet that did not stop Aaron from interacting with all deaf and Deaf people throughout his life -- he gives kudos to his mother and other people in his life. On that same note, Aaron joined many Deaf organizations and clubs such as teen clubs and summer camps around St. Louis and Missouri allowing him to embrace his identity as a Deaf individual and familiarity to sign language early on. That same passion translated into a social awareness for the advancement of his fellow Deaf citizens whether it was communication access issues or job-related discrimination. Aaron started by joining the Missouri/Kansas Teen Institute for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing at 12 years old, a camp promoting education of relationships, drug/alcohol, and Deaf issues. He stayed with that program for the next twelve years, working his way up from intern to Activities Coordinator. After searching for the right college environment, Aaron settled on RIT after three other schools. There were numerous majors tacked on to his transcript reflecting his myriad interests such as Biology and History. Aaron graduated May 2008 with a B.S. in Food Management. So, as you might guess, he is currently employed in the culinary field at home in Missouri. RIT allowed him an opportunity he could not pass up--GRO and international travel! Aaron was one of the delegates to INDIA 2007, and boy, what an experience that was for him! To sum it all, he was changed down to his core. He realized many things such as how each individual on this planet does have an impact on others on the other side of the globe. He looks forward to learning the Deaf Experience in another region of the world--Africa and Kenya, in this case. It is important for American Deaf citizens to realize that they do hold the torch for the rest of the world in terms of how we achieved our present status of ACCESS, though it could still be improved. It is a social obligation for those educated and experienced to go out in the world and spread EMPOWERMENT to those who previously thought their dreams and hopes unreachable. Aaron feels up to that task, and he is optimistic about Kenya 2009.

Angela Tinney
GRO Delegate

Angela Tinney was born in the heart of Texas. She attended Texas School for the Deaf all her life. She was active in sports and also played soccer with South Austin Youth Soccer Association for several years. Angela also enjoys being outdoors, travel, camping and swimming! In fall 2004, Angela attended Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.) and graduated with Bachelor’s degree from College of Imaging Arts and Science. She participated in GRO Kenya 2009 as a U.S. delegate. GRO teamed up with Kenya deaf delegates for a leadership team building program. This was an amazing experience! She wants to continue be part of GRO and is volunteering her time putting together a fund raiser packet for GRO. Angela currently lives in Austin, Texas.

Anita Kurian
GRO Delegate

Anita was born in South India and moved to New Jersey. She is currently pursuing the last phase of her Biotechnology program for a B.A. degree at Rochester Institute of Technology. Anita displayed her advocacy and leadership skills through various roles and participated in GRO Thailand ‘08 and GRO Kenya ’09. As a result, Anita wants to contribute to GRO because it is set up for the right cause, the right requirements and definitely the right hearts. Anita wishes to work with the delegates to make a difference in India – even if one Indian citizen has been helped, it will be like we helped the world. GRO is always in her heart.

Claudia Anderson
GRO Delegate

Claudia Anderson was born deaf in St. Louis, MO. Her older brother is also deaf so she had an earlier intervention than most. Claudia went to an oral school through 5th grade, then was mainstreamed for a year before her family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Claudia went to another mainstream school where, once again, she was the only deaf student, so she learned how to advocate for herself early. Claudia knew she wanted to experience the deaf world so she decided to attend RIT for college. She did not know any sign language other than the ABC's so she went through a bit of culture shock. Claudia went through several majors during her time there, including accounting, criminal justice, and food management. However, she wound up deciding Rochester weather was not for her and transferred to a state school in south Florida, where she studied psychology and minored in history. Unfortunately, Claudia had to withdraw due to extenuating circumstances so she is taking a break from school right now. She moved to DC about a month ago for the summer and is anticipating finishing her degree after all the GRO delegates get back to the states. Claudia doesn't have much experience with international travel other than Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean. Those were pleasure trips, so she is looking forward to seeing what life is like for the deaf in third world countries and seeing what she can contribute to their awareness. Claudia hopes to join groups to other countries after this trip.

Jocelyn Vallery
GRO Delegate

Jocelyn Vallery’s sign name is JV, and she was born in a town near Philly in PA. She grew up mainstreamed with a deaf program at a hearing school. There was always a small number of deaf students at her school. She often wondered if there are many more deaf students out there. So Jocelyn decided to enroll at RIT which gave her a culture shock due to many deaf students; however, she enjoyed it because at least she could share her first language with them. Recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, now pursuing a Graduate’s degree in Information Technology concentrated in Web Development and Animation.Traveling to Honduras was her first international experience – she also had the opportunity to visit Kenya with GRO. There, she realized that this is something she loves to do and wants to contribute to other countries. She plans returning to Kenya to ensure the Kenyan Youth Leadership Camp continue for young deaf Kenyans. So Jocelyn wants to participate in India and learn much as she can so she can try set up a school in Guyana (and other countries if possible) for deaf people to reach their fullest potential to live on their own.

Krishna Madaparthi
GRO Delegate

Krishna Madaparthi's nickname is KC, because most people can't spell his whole name! He was born in India and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Krisha is a second year RIT student, majoring in Applied Computer Technology (ACT). Next year, he will transfer to the bachelor's degree program for another four years. Currently, Krishna is working in the RIT Student Life Team (SLT) as a Community Student Advocate (CSA). Krishna attended mainstream schools, Laurentian High School (LHS) and Glebe Colleague Institute (GCI). It was sometimes a challenge to encounter hearing people, but he joined Student Council to represent Deaf students. During high school, he loved to play with children and worked at Summer Sign Fun camp, Ottawa Deaf Centre as a volunteer, and then as a camp counselor, and lastly as camp coordinator over four years. Outside of school, Krishna organized Mayfest, an annual festival for deaf awareness month in Ottawa twice. Krishna transferred to Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf in Belleville, Ontario, across the lake from Rochester, NY. He became involved in Student Parliament to become the Prime Minster in his first year at Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf. Krishna became very involved with sports and played on many Deaf teams like volleyball, ball hockey, basketball, baseball, and speed swimming! Actually, his favorite sports are rectangle nests like volleyball, tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Krishna was also Editor of the school yearbook in 2006-2007. Before he graduated, he single handedly planned and hosted a protest to protect deaf children's first language in Canada. He guided his fellow students on a march to City Hall. Huge protests took place in cities all over Canada simultaneously that day. It was one of the greatest moments of Krishna's school year! Krishna can't wait to go to Africa! He loves to travel the world. Kenya, Africa is a good start to travel out of North America!

Monica Keller
GRO Delegate

Monica Keller originally comes from Chicago, Illinois, but has moved to four different states: Colorado, New Mexico, New York and California. Her passport is filled with stamps from Costa Rica, Mexico, Amsterdam, Canada, Italy and soon to be: KENYA! Monica is currently a student at Gallaudet University majoring in International Relations/Education. She hopes to combine her love for the Deaf community with her motivation for her major by being part of Global Reach Out Initiative and developing connections with Deaf youth in the future. Monica received an incredible amount of support from her third generation Deaf family and several Deaf schools, and now it is her time to start giving back to the community internationally. She has dual focuses: Deaf programs and education curriculum. Monica wants to study more about how to promote the best education method for Deaf children in the future, such as using the bilingual approach with their own culture and language. Monica is a first time participant of GRO Kenya, Africa in summer 2009 and hopes for more to come under the GRO Initiative program in the future! She is definitely looking forward to meeting everybody at Kenya!

Rebecca Berman
GRO Delegate

Originally from Minnesota, Rebecca (Becca) Berman has always been fond of non-profits and grassroots organizations. In the past few years she has worked with over 30 NGOs in the United States and aboard. After graduating from Smith College with a B.A. in Sociology, she moved to D.C. to intern with an organization which mobilized voter participation efforts for the 2006 elections.  Her involvement with GRO began as a delegate for the Kenya 2009 delegation. This experience inspired her to shift gears and work with youth and education. She then spent six months in India teaching dramatic arts to over 200 children in rural Kerala. Several months later she was thrilled to return to India and GRO as an Assistant Program Co-coordinator for the 2010 India delegation in Trivandrum. Becca believes that GRO is an important organization to inspire youth and young deaf adults to realize their dreams and full potential. Outside of GRO, Becca is currently pursuing a master’s degree in International Training and Education at American University with a focus on inclusive education in international development.
