Spin-4-Haiti

Global Reach Out is supporting a 24 hour spin-a-thon taking place at the Field House at Gallaudet University.  GRO is among Deaf Youth USA, Mezher Up, and other organizations at Gallaudet sponsoring this event.

Several organizations and individuals have been meeting since the earthquake in Haiti to discuss ways that members inside and outside of the Gallaudet community could pool resources and raise funds for the deaf people of Haiti who have been impacted by the disaster.

Global Reach Out, Deaf Youth USA, and Mezher Up have been working together to host a fundraising event scheduled for February the 5th. The event is called "Spin-4-Haiti". The donation drive will go for 24 hours, and the goal is to combine as many on campus and off-campus resources to make a difference. The Gallaudet Athletic Department graciously donated the use of nine stationary bikes, which will be set up in the Gallaudet Field House. To ride a 20 minute shift requires a donation of 10 dollars. So anyone can stop by the Field House, drop 10 dollars down for a good cause and get 20 minutes of exercise in! Better yet, donate 20 dollars and sweat for forty minutes. We're hoping to have all bikes pumping and working for a solid 24 hours.

If you can't afford to donate, but want to help, find a sponsor! Sponsors can donate money for a rider to get on that steel horse for hours and hours. Sweat for a good cause. Let's say that riding a bike isn't your favorite thing to do. Sponsor someone else to ride, or donate just for the sake of donating.

Here's the important part:

All of the money raised on February the 5th will go to an established organization that was making a difference in the lives of deaf people before the earthquake hit. The Friends of Montfort, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) organization is a support group for the school, Institut Montfort in Haiti, which is run by the Daughters of Wisdom. Institut Montfort has over six hundred deaf and deaf/blind children in three locations in Haiti, the majority are in Port Au Prince. For more information visit their website: http://friendsofmontfort.org/institut.html.

As we watched events unfold in Haiti, many of us felt helpless. This is a great opportunity for the everyone to work together to take action. To sign up email: spin4haiti@gmail.com

More information about the organization: Friends of Montfort is a 501 (c) (3) organization that has been established for over ten years and was working to raise funds for the Haiti Deaf School long before the earthquake hit. Friends of Montfort was also recommended as a donation recipient from Sylvie Marc-Charles-Weir, who is a deaf Haitian-American and graduate student at Gallaudet University. Her mother, Florence Marc-Charles is on the board of trustee for this non-profit organization
